Every horoscope column rests on a single astronomical claim: that on your birthday the Sun stood in your sign. It is the perfect case for the method, because the underlying astronomy is actually real — the zodiac is a working ancient coordinate system — the season-of-birth question is genuinely open, and the personality reading is an overclaim. And the load-bearing fact is computable from nothing but your birth date: where was the Sun, really?

The answer was discovered around 130 BC by the last person to seriously check — Hipparchus. The columns haven't updated since.

The wheel has slipped

Take the honest core first. The zodiac is real, working astronomy: a Babylonian coordinate system that divides the Sun's yearly path into twelve 30° signs, counted from the vernal equinox. The constellations are also real — but they're patterns of stars, and the IAU boundaries that carve the Sun's path give thirteen of them, in wildly unequal slices.

The catch is that the two systems are pinned to different things — the signs to the equinox, the constellations to the stars — and Earth's axis wobbles like a slowing top, once every ~25,772 years. So the equinox slides backward along the stars:

In the ~2,100 years since the sign boundaries were codified, the drift comes to about 29° — almost exactly one sign. Enter your birthday and read both rings: for 86% of dates the printed sign is wrong, and if you were born between November 29 and December 17 the Sun was in Ophiuchus, a constellation no horoscope has ever printed. Drag the epoch and watch the sky ring turn: Hipparchus's wheel, your wheel, and the "Age of Aquarius" — which the boundaries say hasn't started yet.

Then the mechanism check, because a chart that pointed at the right stars would still need a way to reach the crib. Gravity is computable: Mars at its closest pulls on a newborn slightly less than the obstetrician standing at the delivery table — and in tidal terms, the only kind of gravity that could deform anything, the obstetrician wins by eleven orders of magnitude.

The zodiac is real astronomy — and it precessed.

Signal. The signs are a genuine Babylonian coordinate system, good enough to predict eclipses with. Hipparchus discovered precession around 130 BC by comparing his star positions against catalogs 150 years older; today the wobble is tracked by radio interferometry to fractions of an arcsecond.

Kill test. Predict the equinox drift, then compare star catalogs across the centuries. It survives — 50.29″/yr, one lap in ~25,772 years, exactly as the wheel above assumes.

Does birth season leave a trace?

Signal. This is the honest kernel the astrological mood points at: season-of-birth correlations are a real epidemiological literature — small winter-birth excesses in schizophrenia risk, effects on myopia, even lifespan — with candidate mechanisms like maternal infection and vitamin D.

Unresolved. The effects are small, confound-prone (who conceives when is not random), and fight over replication — genuinely undecided in scope, not in existence.

Kill test. Hemisphere flip: a seasonal mechanism must invert south of the equator; a zodiacal one must not. Large southern-cohort studies exist and lean seasonal. Diggable, ongoing.

"Sun signs shape personality."

Signal. The kernel is real: birth timing can matter a little (see the open layer), and the readings feel accurate — structured self-reflection genuinely helps people, whatever the pretext.

Noise. The feeling of accuracy is the Barnum effect — people accept tailored-sounding generalities. And whatever the columns print, the Sun wasn't in that sign: the chart points at a sky 2,000 years stale.

Kill test. Run it double-blind. Carlson (Nature, 1985): 28 professional astrologers, charts matched to personality profiles at chance. Dean & Kelly (2003): 2,000+ "time twins" born minutes apart share no measurable traits. Run, and failed.

"The planets imprint the newborn."

Signal. The one serious statistical claim — Gauquelin's "Mars effect" in champions' birth charts (1955) — was real enough to occupy skeptics for decades, and taking it seriously was the right response.

Noise. It dissolved under independent replication and selection-bias audits (Benski et al., 1996). And the physics has nowhere to hide: the delivery-room comparison above is the entire causal budget — no known field of Mars beats the obstetrician's.

Kill test. Pre-registered replication with independent birth samples: the effect vanishes. A mechanism that no instrument can find and no replication can hold forbids nothing.

Notice the sift one last time: the real layer is so real it ruins the overclaim — precession is the measured astronomy that moved every sign off its stars. The open layer survives by trading the stars for the seasons. And the readings fail the tests their own claims demand. The sky is genuinely turning; it's just not about you.
