This one inverts the usual pattern. The wild-sounding claim — that a 2,000-year-old
device pulled from a shipwreck computed the heavens with startling precision — is
not the overreach. It's the plain truth. The overreach is
"the Greeks couldn't have built it, so aliens did." Parallax
works both ways: sometimes triangulating the frontier means defending the astonishing
thing against the people who would explain it away.
And its genius is something you can compute yourself — a ratio, cut into bronze.

The honest core is the whole story. In 1901, sponge divers pulled a corroded lump of
bronze from a Roman-era shipwreck off the island of Antikythera. A century of study —
culminating in CT scans that finally read the hidden gearwork — revealed a hand-cranked
astronomical computer from roughly 150–100 BCE: some 30 meshing
bronze gears that tracked the Sun and Moon through the zodiac, showed the Moon's phase,
and predicted eclipses. Nothing else this complex survives from antiquity for over a
thousand years.
Its genius is arithmetic in bronze. To move the Moon correctly, it must complete 254
sidereal circuits of the zodiac for every 19 solar years — the exact ratio Greek and
Babylonian astronomers had already measured:
And there, on the scans, is a wheel with 127 teeth. The Metonic cycle
(19 years = 235 lunar months) and the Saros eclipse cycle (223 months
≈ 18 years) are cut into its dials the same way. Turn the crank and watch the
heavens move.
This is precisely the astronomy of the era, executed with known Hellenistic metalwork.
The "aliens" claim isn't merely wrong — it steals the credit from the people
who actually did something miraculous. Turn the crank, and decide who you're more
impressed by.

Signal. Recovered in 1901, decoded across a century — Derek de Solla Price's "Gears from the Greeks" (1974), then CT scans by the Antikythera Mechanism Research Project (2006, 2021). ~30 surviving gears track the Sun and Moon, show phases, and predict eclipses via a 223-cell Saros dial.
Kill test. Read the tooth counts off the scans and check them against known Greek astronomical cycles. They match — 235, 223, 127. Confirmed. The wonder is real.
Signal. The astronomy points to the Hipparchus/Rhodes tradition; some scholars trace the geared-cosmos lineage back toward Archimedes.
Unresolved. The exact maker and workshop are unknown, parts of the front planetary gearing are reconstruction rather than certainty, and whether it was a one-off or one of many now-lost devices is genuinely open.
Kill test. Find a second mechanism, or an ancient text naming the workshop. Actively sought — and the honest state is "we don't yet know."

Signal. The sophistication really is startling for its era — the instinct that "this doesn't belong here" is understandable.
Noise. But every function maps onto the Greek/Babylonian astronomy of the period, and the gearing is fully explicable with known Hellenistic craft. "Aliens" explains nothing and erases a real human achievement.
Kill test. Does it compute anything beyond period-era astronomy? No — not one function exceeds what Hipparchus's contemporaries knew. Human genius, full stop.

Signal. It does prove ancient technology is badly underrated — this is a real, humbling correction.
Noise. It proves the Hellenistic Greeks were superb engineers — not that a hidden supercivilization existed. One brilliant instrument is not an industrial base.
Kill test. Is there corroborating material culture — mass-produced gears, other machines, a manufacturing trail? No. It's a pinnacle artifact of a known culture, not a relic of a hidden one.
Notice the inversion: here the "wild" claim is the real layer, and parallax
spends its rigor defending the astonishing truth from the tidy story that would flatten
it. Sometimes the frontier is exactly where the establishment was too timid, not too
credulous. The mystics were wrong about the mechanism — but the machine was every bit as
marvelous as they hoped, and it was ours.
